Is it possible to experience canyoning in the rain?  The simple answer is Yes and No, the long answer actually relies upon the Canyon or Gorge variables as well as the rain variables. In this article, I will explore both factors in answering the question.    The Rain  The rain has numerous factors, the extent of the rain, the time span of the rain and the region wherein it is falling. Massive torrential rain has the maximum potential of disrupting a canyoning experience, dramatically increasing the water volume coursing through the gully, gorge or canyon. Mild rain may have no real effect on a canyoning experience. The term of the rain (How long it has been raining) will specifically have an impact on the quantity of water being discharged into the gorge and this will influence the quantity of water within the ravine. If the catchment zone directly above the Canyon sees big precipitation, ie it is raining at the canyon it could have a negligible effect on the volume of water coursing thru the ravine.  The key to the rainfall is the catchment area that feeds the Canyon, this is generally further away from the canyon location where an activity is taking place.  Again there could be no rain on site of the gully or ravine but the catchment area is saturated with heavy rainfall, ie each one of the streams, rivers and waterways that feed the ravine are full and swelling upstream due to rain in the catchment area even though the Canyon is dry. In this case, the water volume has still to arrive at the canyon and this can be very dangerous.    The canyon The means by which every Ravine is formed and the geography of the region will decide how quick it fills and the way it handles additional water quantity. Some Gullies can manipulate greater water fairly effortlessly as the streams that slice through them are rather profound or astoundingly wide. Scottish Canyoning Canyoning in Scotland is still a fairly unknown sport but it is now starting to grow fast. We are definitely still a number of steps behind our brothers and sisters in Europe in terms of popularity and Canyon options but we (and a number of other Scottish canyoning companies ) are working hard to change that.
